Roofing Contractor Insurance
GL, workers' comp, and auto for one of the hardest trades to place, with the exclusions that deny roofing claims explained.
Who Needs It
- Residential and commercial roofers
- Storm-restoration contractors
- Gutter, siding, and exterior trades classified as roofing
What It Covers
- GL from carriers that write roofing, with disclosed open-roof, height, and hot-work terms
- Workers' comp at roofing class rates or Texas non-subscriber alternatives
- Commercial auto for crew trucks and trailers
- Inland marine for tools
- Same-day certificates with AI endorsements
What It Does Not Cover
- Open-roof water damage on forms with the exclusion
- Work above two or three stories on restricted forms
- Torch-down and hot-tar without hot-work coverage
- Uninsured sub crews
- Cosmetic-only warranty claims
Texas Notes
DFW and Houston storm-restoration volume drives carrier appetite by season. Read for open-roof exclusions and height limits; a cheap quote usually carries more of them.
Florida Notes
Tampa and the Gulf coast re-roof market runs on wind-mitigation work under the Florida Building Code; comp is mandatory from the first employee and checked by the CILB.
Roofing Contractor Insurance Questions We Hear Most
What is the open-roof exclusion?
It excludes water damage to the building when a roof is left open or incomplete. Some forms void coverage overnight regardless of tarping; others require a documented tarp-and-secure protocol.
Can I get a policy without a height limit?
Yes, from a narrower market and at a higher rate. Tell us the tallest building you will touch this year and we write to it.
Does a prior claim mean I can't get coverage?
Rarely. Carriers price and underwrite on frequency and severity over three to five years. One closed claim usually narrows the market slightly; a pattern narrows it a lot. Tell us everything up front; an undisclosed claim found at binding is worse than a disclosed one.
