Commercial Auto Insurance
Liability and physical damage for vehicles owned, leased, or used by your business.
Who Needs It
- Any business with titled vehicles
- Trades with crew trucks and trailers
- Businesses whose employees drive their own cars for work (hired & non-owned)
What It Covers
- Liability for bodily injury and property damage you cause with a covered auto
- Collision and comprehensive on scheduled vehicles
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist
- Medical payments or PIP
- Hired and non-owned auto (endorsement or separate)
- Trailers and attached equipment
What It Does Not Cover
- Tools and cargo inside the vehicle (inland marine / cargo)
- Employees' injuries (workers' comp)
- Vehicles used to haul for hire under a motor carrier filing (trucking policy)
- Racing, rental to others
Texas Notes
Minimum 30/60/25 liability is far below any contract requirement; $1M combined single limit is standard. Hail is a physical-damage driver on fleets; consider higher comprehensive deductibles with an aggregate.
Florida Notes
Florida's PIP and no-fault rules apply to commercial autos registered in state. UM/UIM is strongly recommended given uninsured-driver rates.
Commercial Auto Insurance Questions We Hear Most
Does my personal auto policy cover a work truck?
Not if the vehicle is titled to the business or used primarily for business. Personal policies exclude business use beyond incidental.
What is hired and non-owned auto?
Coverage for liability when employees drive rented vehicles or their own cars on company business. Nearly every business needs it, even without owned vehicles.
Does a prior claim mean I can't get coverage?
Rarely. Carriers price and underwrite on frequency and severity over three to five years. One closed claim usually narrows the market slightly; a pattern narrows it a lot. Tell us everything up front; an undisclosed claim found at binding is worse than a disclosed one.
