Health Care Practice Insurance: Beyond Malpractice

The eight coverages a clinic or allied-health practice needs, and the three that get missed.

Professional vs. general liability

PL responds to treatment. GL responds to the slip in the lobby. A single 'health care package' can bundle both, but the PL limits must be separate.

  • Occurrence PL where available; claims-made with tail otherwise
  • Per-provider limits, not shared
  • Consent-to-settle clause protects your license record

Regulatory: HIPAA, licensing, billing

A HIPAA breach or a billing audit is now more likely than a malpractice suit for most practices.

  • Cyber with HIPAA regulatory defense and fines (where insurable)
  • Billing E&O / regulatory audit coverage
  • Licensing board defense sublimit ≥ $50K

Abuse & molestation

Every practice with hands-on treatment or vulnerable patients needs it, and many forms exclude it.

  • Affirmative coverage, not silence
  • Limits at least $1M
  • Background-check and chaperone policies documented

Frequently Asked Questions

My employed NPs have their own policies — do I still need PL?

Yes. The entity is sued separately (vicarious liability, negligent hiring/supervision). Entity PL is standard.

Is telehealth covered?

Only if the policy says so and the provider is licensed in the patient's state. Ask for affirmative telehealth wording.

What's a 'tail' and when do I need one?

Extended reporting on a claims-made policy. Needed when you switch carriers without prior-acts coverage, retire, or close.
